California Travel Intentions
CTTC recently took another look at the likelihood to travel to California in the next year. Strategic Marketing & Research, Inc. (SMARI) found that intentions in January 2009 were slightly up over fall 2008, although most were still down from spring 2008. Some of the change may be attributed to seasonality, but it is likely that the shock of the fall crisis has softened, at least when it comes to planning for a vacation to California. Primary markets include Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

Spending Shifts
According to travel consulting group Destination Analysts and a CTTC survey, visitors are now more likely to spend less when they travel, especially on accommodations. Instead, our survey found that 23% said they planned to stay with friends and family instead of paid accommodations. Results from the CTTC survey and Destination Analysts showed that respectively, 28% and 29% said they planned to spend less money on leisure travel in the next 12 months. Other findings show that 18% will choose destinations closer to home, 16% will take shorter trips and 23% will choose to fly instead of drive.
